A Primer of the Best Cloth Diapers

When Dick and Jane delivered darling Jennifer in 1958, naturally, they diapered her in the best cloth diapers of the time.  Jane happily laundered little Jenny’s diapers and quickly, conveniently dried them in her brand-new washer and dryer combination.  See Jane wash and dry.  Modern technology made a housewife’s day so much easier.  Then, in 1988, when Dick, Jr., and Jaymie introduced little Courtenay to the great big world and all the family, they declared their loyalty to disposable diapers.  Jaymie almost immediately returned to her thriving corporate career, and Dick, Jr. had just become a partner in the firm.  They had no time for laundry, and Courtenay was too busy for long and difficult diaper changes.  See Dick and Jaymie work.  See Courtenay dance, tumble, and study the alphabet.  Modern technology made Dick, Jr’s and Jaymie’s lives so much easier.

But now that Dick III and Jessica are about to deliver cute little Chloe, the world has changed.  Science has revealed comfortable cotton as a planet-ravaging villain, and common sense has revealed disposable diapers as landfill bullies—two tons of mildly toxic waste for every baby who ever strapped-on a Huggie.  Chloe will wear organic  cotton and hemp diapers in her “all-in-one diaper system.”  See Dick III and Jessica save the planet for cuddly little Chloe.

“Hemp?!” the family cries, aghast.

Yes, an innovative blend of organic cotton and hemp now stands-out as by far the very best cloth diaper.

Hemp-Cotton Blends  Absolutely Dominate Old-Fashioned  Cotton

Old-fashioned cotton production accounts for nearly half of the world’s chemical fertilizer and pesticide use, and three of the world’s most devastating ecological disasters have resulted from negligence on commercial cotton farms in Eastern Europe and Asia.  A poorly managed cotton farm can do almost as much environmental damage as a runaway nuclear reactor; and one commercial cotton farm easily can displace forty or fifty farming families, causing as much economic damage as a boxcar load of sub-prime  mortgages and toxic assets.

Organically grown cotton, on the other hand, supports thousands of earth-friendly family farms in emerging nations, posing no threat to the environment, and boosting local economies out of abject poverty.  Compost and recycled animal waste replace toxic chemicals, replenishing the land between growing seasons, and natural water recovery systems reduce the crops’ impact on precious water reserves.  Better still, hemp grows abundantly without constant tending.  Because hemp has absolutely no insect enemies, it obviously requires no pesticides, organic or otherwise; and because hemp takes very few nutrients from the soil, natural fertilizers and best farming practices preserve the land.

The All-in-One System Kicks Disposables’ Butts

“Pocket diapers,”  “All-in-Ones,” or “AIO’s” as the coolest parents refer to them, have an outer liner—waterproof, organic, and outrageously adorable; and AIO’s feature organic inner liners, which easily slide in and out of “the pocket.”  The pocket holds the liner neatly and securely in place.   With Velcro closures or heavy-duty snaps, the “wrappers” go on and come off as easily and efficiently as disposable diapers.  Their elasticized waist and leg bands make the wrappers as comfortable, movable, and leak-proof as disposables.  And they come in so many styles, colors, and clever designs, haute couture little Chloe can make fashion statements wherever she goes.

Woven in a 75/25 blend of hemp and organic cotton, the best cloth diaper liners are convenient for Dick III and Jessica, consummately comfortable for constantly active little Chloe.  The hemp/cotton liners launder quickly and easily in cold water without bleach, drying quickly in natural sunlight, and growing softer and fluffier with repeated washing.
